update

I suppose I haven't posted in a while so here is my attempt to rectify that sitatuion! I've got a month left in Syracuse (my, my how the time flies). Graduation is JUNE 30! Then my academic career will finally be over (unless I go crazy and decide to get a Ph.d). After Syracuse I'm not quite sure where I'll be. I'm looking into a bunch of different opportunities all over the country. Believe it or not, it is hard to find a job in which you can get paid a lot of money AND make a difference (my damn bleeding heart won't allow me the change to take a job that doesn't directly benefit society in someway).

In other news- does anyone want to go see the Yankees play this weekend? I am thinking about going into the city and no summer time trip will be complete without baseball!

Update

After a week of wonderful perfect break- I came back to Siberia (oh I mean Syracuse). It was nice to see everyone and fall back into my routine but at the same time I do miss my break! I mean I have a memo due tomorrow and paper deadlines coming up. The fun never stops for grad students!

I went to the Billy Joel concert last night and it was fun. Except everyone there was my parents age. My parents are humongous fans and I remember the music from when I was little. He brought a motorcycle onstage leading me to believe that even celebrites are prone to a little mid life crisis.

Also- I have a job interview in the City on Friday. So I'm busy getting ready for that. I'm excited- the job would be def. a great career move for me- but for some reason I don't really feel like going back to NY, at least not now.

SB Summary (SB is spring break for the lay person)

Spring break is almost over- this is sad! I'm having such a blast in DC I don't want to leave *esp since Syracuse is snowing and 26 degrees*. But anyway here are some of the highlights of my trip (the top 10 if you will along w/ some commentary for your amusement)

1. Eating Caesar salad on the 15 (beware the ides of march)
2. Watching Syracuse win the Big East Tournament (not going to talk about their NCAA playing)
3. Being #1 in the basketball bracket thingy (I dropped promptly after Syracuse's loss- thanks GMac)
4. Told by the Chief of Staff for a fairly influential Congressman that my resume is "wonderful" (I am employable!!!!! Yay!!!!)
5. Suprising email from someone who is "passionate about fashion" (if you don't get it- just move on to point 6)
6. Text messages from the boy who is building houses for humanity down in New Orleans (although running out of whenever minutes - NOT SO FUN)
7. Maxwell Networking (all the alums have nice fancy jobs so there is hope- plus there were free margaritas)
8. Going through the Kiss and Ride (but honestly- not as erotic as the name makes it sound)
9. Jeremy! Hanging out in CP w/ Jer and Snowshoe is a blast b/c they are so cool(Jeremy will even cook for you if you come over)
10. MEGAN! Even w/ the write on stress she's still awesome-- I could make a list just of our little escapades- drunk frat boys, middle school guidance counselers who don't drink but hang out in bars to blow off women, waiting forever for sushi, waiters who forget sushi, Southern waiters who sit down next to us, reading cosmo, preparing for the prom, ESPN Zone....

So off to the 'Cuse tomorrow... the countdown until my MPA will be commencing shortly!

DC vacation

It has been 10 million years since I updated- how typical. But I've been down South so it's allowed. Well, if you consider DC the south. It has been a lot of work (this class) but really worth it. I made a lot of wonderful contacts (like the former Senator from Michigan) and I had a lot of fun. I'm really thinking that I may want to move here more permenantly after graduation. Oh and speaking of that- I don't want to jinx myself but I have a job interview w/ a government consulting firm. I do have some moral issues w/ some of their practices but if they offer enough I may sell out... spoken like a true poli sci major (or Maxwell student). I'll keep you all updated on it. I'm back in the 'cuse tomorrow- how did I manage to rack up a $126 electricity bill for December?! I haven't been there all month--oh well... as they say in South Park... blame Canada (where our power company is located)

Guess who's back, back again, I'm back, tell a friend

I'm back after a fantastic Thanksgiving break. I just love being at home and lounging around. It snowed constantly - but we took advantage of that with midnight sledding and snow ball fights!! There was also a ton of food. I think I must have gained about 5 million and twenty-two pounds over break.

Today I went back to good old Maxwell and was greeted by about 5 hours of stats (I must admit I neglected stats poorly over break- but to be sure he got his revenge today!). T-distributions were created by an employee of Guiness. So I am boycottig Guiness! Never again will I be caught dead in a bar with a Guiness.
Tomorrow will bring another day of fun-> classes and a paper on creating performance measurements for non-profits. (But I do enjoy it- I still matain being a student is so much more fun than being a teacher)

2 weeks of class and then finals, then a few days in the City so I can go ice skating and Christmas shopping, back to Michigan and then DC for winter semester. Ohh and one last thought: do you think I could get away with a mass email instead of Christmas/Holiday cards? I don't think that this year I'm going to have the time to get it all together to do it. But if it is tacky then I most certaintly can't do it!

Random thoughts

Just some random thoughts:
1. Econ, econ, econ-> I am soooo not ready for this exam on tuesday. I think I totally kicked ass on stats the other day- it would be nice to have a repeat performance of ass kicking but I've never been a girl to minimize cost/maximize profits.

2. Uggs-> I bought a pair of Uggs today!! Yay! So if it is going to freeze that's ok b/c at least I'll do it looking fabulous. I just need to waterproof them. Oh the fun of living under mounds of snow.

3. Social policy-> this paper on homeless children and educational opportunities for them? Not really that much fun. It is getting pretty damn tedious. Maybe I'm just a little (tad/smidge) burnt out.

4. Antonio Banderis-> sooooo too old to be Zorro. I went w/ my friend from school today to see Zorro. It was def. not the ultimate cinematic experience- but it got me away from work (kind of: while waiting in line for concessions we did manage to have a interesting discussion about how the theater was inefficent and how the millions of workers behind the counter was an example of diminishing marginal return)

So today did I do much studying? No. I parked myself on my couch and watched hours of tv...not just any tv.... movies! GIRLY movies! I watched Sleepless in Seattle and Titanic (damn you TBS and HBO). Next thing you know I'm listening to Celine Dion and making cookies! My God! I am a WOMAN. I'm going to need to kick back Tequila and watch some sort of sports in order to put myself into balance.

Update

Yes I do suppose I update my livejournal from time to time. Not much has been going on in my life I'm sad to say (although I am pretty hot and heavy with stats-- oh baby-- statistics rocks my world). Last night I redid my resume because job hunting is a WHOLE LONG PROCESS! Ugh. The politics of job hunting- resumes, cover letter, interviewing, it is amazing that anyone who has ever gone through the process actually makes it to the first day on the job without being completely and utterly burned out. But if anyone knows about a place willing to throw tons of money at a poor Masters Education/MPA let me know!!

Lets see what else.... Halloween party tonight. I am going to be a witch. Just like last year... and the year before that.... but what can I say? I make a damn good witch (must be something in my personality).

Love you all!

Work! Work! Work!

My weekend was full of stats and econ |*ok I did sneak out for a little well needed partying in the 'cuse thursday and friday - but both nights I came home by midnight and snuck in at least a couple of hours of work*| Now I am writing a paper on marriage being the "answer" to solving low-income poverty and children's well being. Hm. I agree that a fincially stable family committed to the children is optimal (notice I did not neccessarily say this is a two parent family). However, forcing marriage among poor people who find themselves in a illegitimate child situation is not the answer. If you can't afford a condum, you can't afford a child so keep it in your pants (Although I am NOT trying to insinuate that sex or child rearing is a luxury only afforded to the rich... it is just a decision that you must think about first). But that is just my own personal opinion.

My goodness. I am becoming "bookish". My roommate did warn me I am losing my party girl reputation when she had to talk me out of going into the lab to do stats on a saturday night. I need a vacation. Anyone up for the caribean?

Political stargazing

In the airport writing a policy memo. Well that is what I am suppose to be doing. In reality I'm just blogging and checking my email. Oh well. Damn wireless hotspots. They just help me procrastinate in new venues. Procrastination on the road.

I'm en route to Syracuse after a week in NY where I worked at the Clinton conference. It was very exciting! So many heads of state where there (like the King and Queen of Jordan, Tony Blair) and other political heavy hitters like Kofi Anon, Paul Wolfowitz, Jesse Jackson, Ted Turner, Rupert Murdoch, Madeline Albright (for a poli sci geek like me this was like being a 13 year old at a boy band extravaganza-- not that I am comparing Al Gore to or Justin Timberlake or anything but you get the picture). I rode in the elevator w/ Al Sharpton. His hair really seems to be suspended in air. How much gel do you think he uses?

But the most exciting attendee - BRAD PITT! I saw Brad Pitt! Yes. Brad. I restrained from jumping him. He was in the poverty conference- hot AND he has a social conscience-- mmmm......

Anyway I guess I should get back to my policy memo. Ugh. I don't want to go back to the 'cuse. How dull. How anticlimactic. How unBrad Pittish. You all need to give me a call or email me sometime b/c I get bored upstate

Tired ramblings

Wow. I'm tired. Maybe I want to take another nap. I also haven't been on lj for the longest time - I'm much more a telephone person. So all my news is usually disseminated in that way. But here is a series of random thoughts floating around in my head for anyone who is particularly interested:

1) I am the Junior Senator from Hawaii, Daniel Akaka. No I haven't gone totally batty, but in our Public Administration and Democracy class there is a gigantic simulation in which we are "playing" the federal government. Being Daniel is taking all my time and it makes me realize just how limited the power is of Democrats when there is Republican control in both houses and executive branch. Frustrating.

2) Charlie and the Chocolate Factory---> um when did Willy Wonka become Michael Jackson?! Also, the whole oompa loompa thing is pretty sketchy. Do they have work permits? There is something that doesn't seem very legal about the whole set up. The chocolate too..... I think the factory is violating some sort of health code violations. Squirrels touching the nuts that go into chocolate (rodents anyone?), and I'm sure they sold the chocolate that Augustus Gloop had been swimming in. Oh and boy oh boy does that man have a lawsuit on his hands for the things that happened to those children during the tour. But I did like the movie despite the few reservations I had

3) Americans are pretty damn stupid. Most cannot name their Senators or their Congressperson... nevermind these are the people who are making the LAWS of the country. Not entirely insignificant. Forget about knowing how they stand on issues. UGH. STUPID, STUPID, STUPID people.

4) Some guy said to me "you can't cook? but you are a woman." Then I went off on him for his sexist and horribly misogonystic comment. Please. There are quite a few Republicans in this program which is slightly shocking to me.

Tony Blair wins again. The Economist claims that foreign policy ranked only 16th on the country's agenda. So both Tony and George faced no reprecussions for fabricating a war. WHAT THE HELL?!!

I am a dork

Friends, Romans, countrymen, lend me your ears;
I come to bury Caesar, not to praise him;
The evil that men do lives after them,
The good is oft interréd with their bones,
So let it be with Caesar…. The noble Brutus
Hath told you Caesar was ambitious:
If it were so, it was a grievous fault,
And grievously hath Caesar answered it….
Here, under leave of Brutus and the rest,
(For Brutus is an honourable man;
So are they all; all honourable men)
Come I to speak in Caesar's funeral….
He was my friend, faithful and just to me:
But Brutus says he was ambitious;
And Brutus is an honourable man….
He hath brought many captives home to Rome,
Whose ransoms did the general coffers fill:
Did this in Caesar seem ambitious?
When that the poor have cried, Caesar hath wept:
Ambition should be made of sterner stuff:
Yet Brutus says he was ambitious;
And Brutus is an honourable man.
You all did see that on the Lupercal
I thrice presented him a kingly crown,
Which he did thrice refuse: was this ambition?
Yet Brutus says he was ambitious;
And, sure, he is an honourable man.
I speak not to disprove what Brutus spoke,
But here I am to speak what I do know.
You all did love him once, not without cause:
What cause withholds you then to mourn for him?
O judgement! thou art fled to brutish beasts,
And men have lost their reason…. Bear with me;
My heart is in the coffin there with Caesar,
And I must pause till it come back to me.

Is it wrong that this speech really turns me on?!! DO I NEED HELP?!
